All Wet!

Shiloh's umbilical cord FINALLY fell off (much to Bear's amazement, he now has a "real" belly button!), so yesterday he got to get in the tub and have his very first real bath! We used the same tub we had with Norah, which I absolutely love.

It has a removable sling for use when the baby is extra tiny, and I must say, this feature has made bathing these last two newborns much easier than it was with my older two! (With Autumn, her first bath took 3 people plus a videographer to accomplish, and we still almost managed to drown the poor child!) When the baby is itty bitty, you just fill the tub all the way up with nice, warm water and then set the baby in the sling to rest for the duration of the bath. It cradles their tiny little bodies in just the right amount of water so that they are nice and warm and stable the whole time instead of cold and wet and slipping all over the place while you try to bathe them without dropping them in! Perfect!

I usually put a warm washcloth on the baby's belly while I'm working so that they stay even more comfortable. Shiloh thought it was so cozy that he fell right to sleep! : )

The sling detaches for later use as a standard baby tub. It's a handy little setup! I'm not sure if they make this exact one any more, but I found what I think is the current version on the Target website. I love it!

First Day of School!

I remember this time last year how quiet it seemed here in the house once Autumn was off to 2nd grade and Bear was off to his very first day of kindergarten. I came in after walking them to school, sat on the couch in the relative silence and cried because my little baby boy was a big school kid! Today, for the first time in the history of me having kids that have a first day of school, there were no tears, and when I got home, there was certainly no silence! This time, I walked in the door to an almost-2-year-old Norah who was running back and forth top speed through the living room shouting something unintelligible and an almost-1-month-old Shiloh who had woken up to discover that he was not eating yet and was terribly upset about it! This did not leave me with much time to wax melancholy! : )

But before all of the chaos after dropping the kids off, there was all the beautiful chaos before! Showers, breakfasts and making sure Autumn had all 3,000 of her silly bands on before we could get out the door.

Then, because I am apparently "that mom," we had to stop every few seconds to pose for a photo until we actually got to the doors!

Bear was still quite happy to have me there, but it looks like Autumn is getting to the age where she is starting to feel a little more grown up! I had to practically drag her back to me just to tell her to have a good day, and she was not the least bit interested in having me walk up to her classroom! I guess it's good that I am raising a confident, independent child, but a goodbye or a glance back would have been nice! *sigh

They grow up too fast! Seriously!

Bear still thinks I'm cool though! And he also thinks baby Shiloh is pretty awesome. He had Jason print him out a few pictures of his new little brother to take on the first day, and he was very proud to show them off first thing!

I can't believe Bear is in first grade! He is really excited about the teacher he got, and he was also excited to discover that his assigned seat was right next to his friend Jalen's. I predict this will not last. : )

Well, I guess I had better get off the computer for now... Norah just got busted on the couch with an entire roll of Bubble Tape pulled out next to her and was happily chewing on one end of it! I think it's a sign.

We are now off to the park for a nice walk and some play time with just the little ones! Happy First Day of School everyone! : )

'Twas the night before school starts...

I love the first day of school! It was my second favorite day of the year growing up (because come on... You can't beat Christmas!), and it is one of my favorite days of the year now that I am a mom. It's really not so much that I'm excited to have the kids away for a while (not that it doesn't sound nice sometimes when they're spending hours on end trying to kill each other all summer) as it is just the sheer energy and joy that surrounds the start of something new.

Everything about it makes me happy. The new clothes, the fresh school supplies, the knowledge that fall is just around the corner... It's all just so wonderful!

And now, it's just a few hours away. Yay! : )

The clothes are laid out, the backpacks are packed and the kids are fast asleep in their beds. We are ready for a great year! Pictures to follow in the morning. Good night people! Happy First Day of School!

One Day at a Time!

Well, I know this weight isn't going to disappear overnight, so in an effort to keep my "eye on the prize," so to speak, I have decided to start keeping a calendar on here that publicly tracks my workouts and weight loss progress. Hopefully if I am displaying my workout history in public, that will give me a little added inspiration to get my booty out of the house and into gear! I put a little tracker over under the ad on the right hand side of my blog... I will be updating it with my workouts and with weekly weigh-ins and measurement checks, so click it if you ever want to check up on me! : )

On another note entirely, we just got back from "Meet Your Teacher" night at the kids' school, and they are very excited! They both got the teachers they were really hoping to get, and I think it is going to be a great school year! I'm personally very excited about getting back into a real routine. I think having a little structure in our days will do us wonders!

Body After Baby... The Terrifying Truth!

It seems like there are a lot of things about your body after you have a baby that they neglect to mention and/or elaborate on in the go-to pregnancy manuals. They do a pretty good job of going into great (sometimes gory) detail about the pregnancy and the birth, but then the books switch gears and focus all of their efforts on the tiny adorable bundle of sweetness and light that came out of you and conveniently ignore the sad, deflated packaging from whence the baby came! Nobody seems to talk much about the grim reality that greets you in the mirror about 3 weeks after you have a baby. Having personally witnessed this sight only moments ago, I can tell you... It isn't pretty! Fixable? Yes. Pretty? No.

Right after you have the baby, you're so busy staring at him to make sure he is still breathing that you don't have much time or energy to notice or care that you still look 6 months pregnant. And in truth, I don't even mind the first part, because after all, YOU JUST GAVE BIRTH! It's a great excuse. And we've all seen pictures of women right after they give birth enough to know that the belly will still be there. Most moms will consent to pose for a picture with the baby right after he is born, despite the fact that we all look terrifying, because we're just too stinking happy to care. But then the moms seem to disappear from the family photos for a while until she magically reappears in the photos of the baby turning one, with mom looking fabulous and as if she had never given birth at all. But what happened between the birth and the birthday party? You probably don't want to know.

But in case you DO want to know, I am going to tell you. Isn't that nice of me? : )

So we've established that right afterwards, you still look (at least) 6 months pregnant. Then, for 2 or 3 weeks, through a combination of processes by which you expel a ridiculous quantity of excess body fluids (I won't go into detail, but I will say that it involves an inordinate amount of peeing), your belly shrinks as if by magic. And then one day (apparently at around the 2 and a half week mark if my current situation is any indication), it just stops. One morning, you're still losing a cool half-pound or so a day, and the next morning nothing happens... And the next... And the next! Once you realize that your miraculous weight loss has stopped, you know that you have entered the most dreaded part of the post-partum period: The Mush Belly Phase.

This phase, which is aptly named for the St.-Nick worthy "bowl full of jelly" belly that you will have for the next several months, is characterized by droopy skin, excess fat around your entire midsection (somehow your back will also become involved, but don't ask me how!), and a generalized feeling of anxiety and frustration that sets in once you realize that you have ABSOLUTELY NO CLOTHES IN YOUR CLOSET THAT FIT. Maternity clothes are too big (and also a little demoralizing at this point), and your pre-pregnancy clothes won't even slip up over your newly voluptuous post-baby thighs. Forget about being able to zip them! You can see why this stage is not ideal.

Although I am currently mired in this frustrating state, I am trying to see past it to the other side... To the "New Normal" that awaits if you bust your booty in the gym for several months in an effort to get your body back. (Note: if you are only 20, and this is your first baby, the Mush Belly Phase will be decidedly brief and the working out part may be skipped. After the age of 20 or a second or subsequent baby, sorry, the gym is your only option!!) I keep reminding myself that I have stared in horror at my post-baby image in the mirror 3 other times, and all 3 times things have ended up just fine a few months down the line. SURELY I can do this one more time... Right?

The "New Normal" may not be perfect, but at this point, it's looking pretty dang fantastic. And I am ready to head that way! The only thing standing in my path right now is that, technically speaking, I'm not supposed to be working out yet. And from a nursing perspective, it's not a good time to start cutting calories, since Shiloh and I are still establishing our breastfeeding relationship, and to stop eating when I am hungry could potentially impact my milk production. And then we would have an unhappy baby, which trumps an unhappy mommy any day! So what's a girl to do?

Walk. At least that's my theory. I'm setting a goal to get out and walk for at least 30 minutes 3 times this week. It's not much, but I think it falls within my allowable post-c-section activities, and it is sure better than nothing. This baby fat is not going to lose itself, so unless I want to go out and buy a whole new chubby-girl wardrobe (no thank you!) or go join a nudist colony (which trust me, nobody wants right now), then something will have to be done to lose this baby weight. I knew I shouldn't have eaten all those dang Hardee's Burgers and Braum's Heath Bar Mixes when I was on bedrest! Aaaaagh!

Oh well. Today is a new day, and if I start walking myself in the right direction, every day will be another step away from the Mush Belly Phase towards whatever my "New Normal" body will be at the age of 28 having given birth to 4 (beautiful!) children. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it won't be so bad!

End of the Day

I just got back from shooting my first wedding since I had the baby. It was a fun one, and although it was a little hot outside, the couple was so sweet and the details were so original that I barely even noticed!

Now as I sit here downloading cards, I have my first quiet moment of the day to think. And I was just thinking that I miss my big pregnant belly!

*sigh

Well, so much for quiet. Norah just toddled in here with a request for one last book before she goes to bed. Man, I love these kids!

The 2-Hour Time Out

Nap time at our house is a bit of a battle! Despite the fact that when 1:00 in the afternoon rolls around, Norah is totally exhausted, she absolutely hates to take a nap in her bed! She usually ends up standing up next to the baby gate and just screaming until she falls asleep on the floor. Sometimes she ends up sleeping on the living room floor, or in her high chair, or in Bear's room... Really, she's pretty happy to be anywhere except for her bed! Go figure.

Today was a new one, though. In the midst of one of her 2-minute time outs in the naughty chair for smacking her brother in the head, she'd apparently had enough. I went over to tell her she could get up, and discovered her like this:

This was over an hour ago, and she's still cozily snoozing in the hard wooden chair. Silly girl!
