Milk Madness

I think my boobs are possessed! After behaving themselves quite nicely for approximately 4 days, meeting Shiloh's demand with just a little bit extra for good measure, they have suddenly been taken over by some bizarre milk overproduction impulse that is threatening to break my sanity (and possibly my bra!).

They have him on a 3-hour feeding schedule while he's here in the hospital (which if I was smart, I might maintain when we get home, but what do you think the odds of that are??), and about 2 hours after he nursed earlier today, they started to feel quite full. I made myself wait until the appointed time to pump so that I would not further encourage them in this whole "make enough milk for several babies" idea, but then now, just an hour and a half after I last pumped, I am full to the bursting point.

These girls are like huge, hard, hot, lumpy rocks on my chest, and if the last pumping session is any indication, there are about 150 mL of milk hanging out in there to try and feed a baby whose "full feeds" are currently set at 45 mL! What the heck! I need to pump REALLY bad, but if I give in, I know what will happen... They'll just make more! I mean, Shiloh is a good eater and all, but apparently my milk glands did not get the whole "this baby only weighs 5 pounds" memo!!! Jeez!!!

So instead, I will just sit here and suffer in engorged agony for the next hour and a half until they let me nurse him again. Boy, I can't wait until we're home and he can feed on demand so that we can work out the kinks in this whole supply/demand business!

Oh well. I suppose better too much milk than too little, anyway. But seriously... OUCH!!

  1. Ooooh- I do NOT miss the sore boob stage. I thought that part was more painful than the c-section! :(
Glad he's eating good for you though! He's adorable! :)
